She Asked to Be Let In
The wooden violinist in Genji's hand proves Petra came this far. Upstairs, a harpsichord stops playing the moment the door opens, and Lucy plays the sheet music jammed in its strings. Ghosts fill the room: the master of the house dancing with the nursemaid while his wife watches. Genji smashes the wife's figurine, and a woman's voice tells them they're here to feed her son. Beowolfe pulls a sword off the wall and four suits of armor beat him unconscious for it.
Behind a secret door in the library, a corpse is caught halfway inside a chest. Genji knows the boots. It's Khadba, a treasure-hunter who came here chasing rumors of riches weeks before the festival and never walked out. The letters in his hand and the desk tell the rest: an affair, and a child. A zombie falls out of a closet with warnings written in blood on the walls behind it. Don't trust what you see. Be out before midnight.
A black suit of armor throws Genji over the railing and three stories down, and Remi floats after him on a parachute made of stolen silk. On the top floor there's something breathing in a crib and a girl trapped in a mirror who can only nod. Then someone knocks on the balcony door. It's Petra, soaked and shivering, holding her doll. Lucy lets her in. She thanks Lucy by name, and then she isn't Petra anymore. The ghost jumps from Genji to Beowolfe until Balasar burns it away with one blow of holy light.
